Abstract
1,255,236. Continuous casting. UNITED STATES STEEL CORP. 31 March, 1969 [29 March, 1968], No. 16790/69. Heading B3F. Nozzles 22, Figs. 2, 3, direct jets of argon towards the surface of the melt in an openended mould 10 and the gas is confined, but for a slight leakage, by a pair of cover plates 14, slidable on a frame 11, Fig. 7, to come together and so close the halves of a graphite ring 16, Fig. 3, around a nozzle-extension tube T, Fig. 2, which passes down into the mould from a teeming ladle. There may be glazed windows in the cover plates 14, 15 but these may be omitted if open ended hoods 23 with glazed windows are placed on the plates. The frame 11 is secured to the top of the mould by means of lugs 12 and the graphite collar 16 permits reciprocation of the mould and cover. The nozzles 22 extend from a manifold 18 supported at each end from each plate 14, 15 by a vertical supply pipe 19 extending through the plate. The argon sweeps scum to the ends of the melt bath from which it may be removed on removal of the cover plates.
