Abstract

1352476 Polymeric fatty acids SCHERING AG 17 April 1972 [17 April 1971] 17696/72 Heading C2C Unsaturated fatty acids (8-22 C) or mixtures thereof are polymerized by heating at from 200‹ to 280‹ C. without the application of pressure in the presence of a clay mineral as catalyst while passing steam through the reaction mixture. Oleic, linoleic, linolenic acids or mixtures in natural oils and fats or in tall oil may be used and the clays, e.g. montmorillonite may be acidic or alkaline and modified with an alkali or alkaline earth metal salt, e.g. lithium carbonate. The steam is injected and the volatile products recycled or separated and further polymerized.
