Abstract

1349051 Purifying I C engine exhaust gases FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 19 May 1972 [19 July 1971] 23651/72 Heading F1B Exhaust gases from a catalytic converter 18 are diverted by a valve 24 to a compressor 28 and to a storage device 34 below a predetermined temperature of the converter or the catalyst within it. Above the predetermined temperature the valve 24 permits the exhaust gases to flow to the atmosphere and a valve 46 is opened to permit the exhaust gases in the device 34 to flow to the converter inlet 16. A minor portion of the gases from the inflatable bag 40 may flow through a restriction 54 to the engine intake manifold. The compressor 28 and actuating solenoids of the valves 24, 46 are connected to a battery (60), Fig. 2, (not shown), through three switches in series, an engine ignition switch (64), Fig. 2, (not shown), which is closed when the ignition is switched on, a switch 20 responsive to the pressure at the converter inlet 16 and closed above a predetermined pressure and a temperature responsive switch 66.
