Abstract

1334797 Treating exhaust gas BRITISH LEYLAND MOTOR CORP Ltd 12 Nov 1971 [20 Nov 1970] 55256/70 Heading F1B Exhaust system for an I.C. engine includes first and second paths for exhaust gases flowing from the engine, each path containing a catalytic device to catalyse a reduction in the proportion of noxious products in the exhaust gas, and diverter means responsive to a condition of the exhaust gases to switch the gases from the first to the second path. An exhaust pipe 11 divides into branches 13, 14, each containing a catalytic reactor and a butterfly valve. The valves 15 and 16 are connected for simultaneous operation by an hydraulically operated piston 18 controlled by a servo-mechanism 20 responsive to a temperature transducer 21 in the pipe 11. The reactor 24 is intended for low temperature operation and the catalyst consists of iron and chrome or their oxide. The reactor 23 is intended for high temperature operation and the catalyst is nickel or nickel oxide. Each reducing chamber is followed by an oxidizing chamber to which air is fed through pipes 30 and which contains a platinum or copper catalyst. When the engine is started from cold, the exhaust gas passes through the branch 14, until the temperature reaches 500‹C., when it is diverted along branch 13.
