Abstract

1365604 Purifying I C engine exhaust gases NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 14 April 1972 [ 28 Oct 1971] 17241/72 Heading F1B A casing 22 around the exhaust pipe 18 upstream of a catalytic converter 20 for reducing nitrogen oxides defines an air space 24 with an inlet 26 and an outlet 28. Mechanically connected valves 30 and 32 in the inlet 26 and outlet 28 are operated by a diaphragm actuator 36 linked to the valve 30. The application of intake manifold vacuum to the actuator 36 to open the valves is controlled by a solenoid valve 42 which is energized to open the vacuum conduit 34, 40 under the control of a switch 46. The switch 46 communicates through a conduit 52 with the converter 20 at a point 54 and operates in accordance with the temperature of the converter catalyst. Above a predetermined catalyst temperature, e.g. 650‹C, Fig. 2 (not shown), the switch 46 causes the valve 42 to be energized and air is admitted to the space 24 to effect cooling of the exhaust gases. The switch 46 causes the valve 42 to be de-energized at a lower catalyst temperature, e.g. 450‹C, so that the catalyst temperature can, for certain engine operating conditions, be maintained within a certain range. The casing 22 may have foamed or fibrous insulation.
