Abstract
1342339 Electro-refining copper BRITISH COPPER REFINERS Ltd 18 Dec 1970 [19 Sept 1969] 46236/69 Addition to 1067297 Heading C7B Copper is electrolytically refined by immersing unrefined electrodes, made by cutting a continuously cast copper strip into lengths having the required superficial area, in series in an electrolyte solution, e.g. aqueous CuSO 4 acidified with H 2 SO 4 , contained in a tank whose inner surface e.g. lining is of an insulating, inert polymeric material, e.g. PVC, polythene, polypropylene, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (or modification thereof), or other polymer containing at least C and H, and passing D.C. through the solution maintained at at least 54‹C to cause Cu from one electrode to be dissolved and deposited as pure Cu on another electrode. Intermediate bipolar unrefined electrodes may be suspended from a bar by straps or hooks, or so supported to be totally immersed in the solution as described and claimed in Specification 1342338, the last electrode may be of pure Cu and thinner. The D. C. may be reversed for short periods.
