Abstract
1342338 Electro-refining copper BRITISH COPPER REFINERS Ltd 18 Dec 1970 [19 Sept 1969] 46237/69 Heading C7B Copper is electrolytically refined by continuously casting a copper strip, cutting it into lengths to form unrefined electrode plates having the required superficial area, supporting the electrode plates so that they are totally immersed in series in an electrolyte solution, e.g. aqueous CuSO 4 acidified with H 2 SO 4 , and passing D. C. through the solution to cause Cu from one electrode to be dissolved and deposited as pure Cu on another electrode. As shown, the electrolyte solution tank 1, which may have a lining of an insulating, inert polymeric material as described and claimed in Specification 1342339, contains therein a pair of elongate members 2, the inner side faces of which bear castellations 3 with shoulders 4 against which the electrodes E lean, extending along opposite sides of the tank, and, lying on the tank base, a pair of elongate members 6 of inverted T-shaped cross-section having spaced notches 7 for supporting the electrodes so that slime deposited during electrolytic refining will not form a conductive path between adjacent electrodes. The members 2, 6 are preferably made of resin bonded glass fibre. The D. C. may be reversed for short periods.
