Abstract

1335642 Rotary shaft seals J K DAVIES and B V CADMAN 26 Feb 1972 8953/72 Heading F2B Sealing means for a rotary shaft 1, where it extends through a pump or other casing 2 comprises a primary face seal comprising rotary and non-rotary rings 8 and 9 sealingly secured to the shaft and the casing respectively and having abutting sealing faces 8a, 9a of the same or substantially the same hardness and a secondary face seal comprising rotary and non-rotary rings 15, 10 sealingly secured to the shaft and the casing respectively, one ring 15 having a relatively soft sealing face abutting a relatively hard sealing face of the other ring 10. The rings 8 and 9 are both of hardened steel and are pegged respectively to a flange 5a of a sleeve 5 secured to the shaft and to a carrier ring 10, also of hardened steel, slidably pegged to a support 13 fixed to a casing flange 4. The ring 10 is sealed to the flange 4 by a flexible bellows 11 which urges ring 9 against rings 8 and 15 and ring 10 against ring 15 and a further ring 16. The ring 15 is of fibre packing material and the ring 16, which is fixed to the sleeve 5 by a peg 17, is of carbon. The invention is particularly applicable to pumps for liquid carrying solid particles which, in use, are prevented by the primary seal from reaching the secondary seal.
