Abstract
1,194,131. Mechanical seals. SYBRON CORP. 14 March, 1968 [14 April, 1967], No. 12534/68. Heading F2B. A shaft 30 (e.g. agitator or turbine) is sealed where it passes into the vessel by a rotatable ring 22 urged into contact with a sealing face 14 by rubber or metal spring means 43 which is housed in an annular space between the ring and shaft and is protected from the contents of the vessel by a resilient seal 21. A second mechanical seal 25, 26 may also be employed to define a chamber 32 for lubricant. The ring 22 may be made of ceramic material and the wall of the vessel lined with glass. The ring 21 may be made of P.T.F.E. or neoprene and, if desired, reinforced with a rubber or metal ring. Pin 42 limits the travel of the ring 21 under pressure from within the vessel. In Fig. 3 (not shown), a carbon ring (349) is recessed into the vessel wall for co-operating with the shaft ring (322) which is urged by a spring (343) housed in a retainer (341B), a glass lining being provided on the ring, shaft and a shoulder ring (323F). In Fig. 4 (not shown), the seal is protected by an enclosure which is fed with fluid under pressure through a duct (452), the fluid being arranged to leak into the vessel past a lip seal (451) to prevent entry of solids.
