Abstract

1333741 Direct connections V S DAVEY 19 April 1971 [13 Jan 1970] 1631/70 Heading H2E A method of making an electrically conducting joint between two metal electrical conductors comprises; inserting a quantity of an adhesive polymer in a fluid or viscous presetting state between the conductor surface areas which are to be contacted, bringing the surfaces together under a pressure sufficient to ensure electrical contact between the surfaces at multiple points resulting from surface irregularities and mechanically securing them together and in the process squeezing out the excess adhesive from between the surfaces and finally causing or permitting the remaining polymer between the surfaces to harden whilst the pressure is maintained. Such a connection may be made between two flat surfaces (Fig. 1, not shown) and the pressure may be applied by means of a belt clamping the plates together. Also it may be used to join a conductor 20 to a terminal tag 21 by inserting the conductor coated with unset polymer into the sleeving 22 of the tag, the pressure being applied by forming a crimp 24 in the sleeve. The polymer employed may be a weatherproof elastomer, a silastomer or a rigid polymer. The adhesive may initially be contained in one or more capsules which are punctured as the surfaces are brought together.
