Rolling.-A manipulator, of the type described in Specification 8840/03, for holding and moving rails and the like, is constructed so that the gripping-members j can easily be removed and changed. The annular gapped plates a, b are supported on a frame f by guide-rollers c, d, and carry on their inner faces pairs of opposite pins g, g<1> and h, h<1> respectively. These pins engage in slots m in the gripping-members j, so that when the plates a, b are rotated relatively to one another, the gripping-members are moved together or apart, but when the plates a, b are rotated together, the work is merely turned. The plates a, b, j can be removed and replaced after taking out two or more of the rollers c, d. In a modification, the rotatable plates a, b, instead of being guided by rollers, are mounted on a central spindle, and the grippers j project laterally as jaws. The machine can then be taken down by removing the spindle. In either case, the plates a, b may alternatively be so arranged that, when the grippers j are to be removed, one of the plates can be moved axially away from the other to enable the pins g to clear the grippers j. Further, the pins g, g<1> and h, h<1> may be arranged on one side of the plates a, b, instead of interiorly, one of the plates being slotted to clear the pins on the other: or the plates may be converted into co-axial sleeves for this purpose, with an overhang to cover the grippers j and support the outer ends of the pins. The grippers j may be shaped to take a rail of any section, or may carry rollers over which the work A can be passed, or projections which prevent their gripping the work tightly. In the case where the work is gripped. the machine can be traversed towards the rolling- mills as a whole. The plates a, b are rotated by toothed racks, spur-wheels, worm gear, chains. or ropes.
