[Class 83 (iv)] In a manually-operated tool for straightening or bending wire, tubes, bars, &c. particularly for straightening kinks in overhead traction wire, of the kind having two pressure members which move over the work with a rolling action, the members are mounted between pairs of side plates forming two frames, one side plate of one pair being hinged to the corresponding side plate of the other pair while the other side plates are releasably connected together so that the two parts of the tool can be swung apart on the hinges so as to be readily placed over the work and then closed down on it and refixed in operative position. The top frame consists of side plates 3, 4, connected together by distance pieces 5 and nuts 6 and provided with a cover 36, and the lower frame consists of side plates 37, 38 connected together by distance pieces and nuts 43. The top frame mounts two grooved rollers 9 to which are attached gear wheels 11 which may be driven by a pinion 14 on a shaft 15 rotatable by a handle 30 so as to traverse the tool along the work. The shaft 15 is fixed in operative position by a semi-circularly-recessed spring- controlled pivoted locking member 25 which engages a groove in the shaft. The shaft may be moved axially so as to bring the pinion out of gear so that the tool :may be moved rapidly along a straight portion of the wire to be treated without the necessity for operating the handle, the shaft being held in position by engagement of the member 25 with the collar 24 on the shaft. The member 25 has a handle 35 to facilitate operation. The bottom frame which carries three rollers 41 in staggered position relatively to the rollers 9 has its side plate 38 mounted on hinge bolts 48 which are attached to a pair of hinges 47 on the plate 4 so that the top frame may be swung on the hinges 47. The side plate 37 is provided with a pair of lugs 54 between which may be received a swing bolt 53 hinged at 52 to the side plate 3 and provided with a nut 55 so as to release or clamp the top frame as required. The lower frame is adjustable to suit the size of wire or degree of deformation thereof by the nut 55 and by nuts 50 carried by the hinge bolts 48. The side plate 38 has a lug 57 for receiving a handle 56 for steadying the tool during operation. When used for bending, the two end rollers 41 are removed.
