Abstract

1326736 Electrolytic treatment of carbon fibres MORGANITE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 1 Oct 1970 [8 Oct 1969] 49357/69 Heading C7B A carbon fibre made e.g. by heating a polyacrylonitrile fibre, is given improved bonding properties by making it the anode in an electrolytic bath of e.g. H 2 SO 4 , H 2 SO 4 and chromic ions, H 2 O 2 , potassium permanganate, HCl and ferric chloride, NaCl or sodium hypochlorite. The current input point is moved relative to the fibre axis, during treatment, by e.g. moving the input point or the fibre. Several input points may be used, e.g. Fig. 2 (not shown) four anode rollers are used. Alternatively, Fig.4, the fibre passes several times over an anode roller 21, which may be grooved. A carbon cathode may be used. The electrolyte may be stirred or ultrasonically vibrated.
