Abstract
PURPOSE:To electrolyze water at a low valtage so as to produce hydrogen over a long period in a stable manner, by passing an electric current through gas- and liquid-permeable electrodes embedded in a cation exchange film with parts of them exposed. CONSTITUTION:Either one or both of the gas-and liquid-permeable anode and cathode are embedded, and if on electrode is to be embedded, it is embedded in one surface of the cation exchange film. If both the electrodes are to be embedded, the anode is embedded in one surface of the cation exchange film, and the cathode is embedded in the other surface. In this way, the electrodes are made also serve as reinforcements for the exchange film so that fine wrinkles would not appear on the exchange film surface. Consequently, the release of hydrogen and oxygen generated by the electrolysis from the electrodes and the exchange film is facilitated, and a safe operation over a long period can be secured.
