Abstract

1323097 Scoring glass PILKINGTON BROS Ltd J McCUTCHEON GRAY J PIONKE and E JOHNSON 25 June 1971 [10 July 1970] 33645/70 Heading C1M A device for scoring a line on glass sheet or ribbon comprises a cutter assembly 1 and a double acting pneumatic cylinder and piston 4, 5 which urges the cutter assembly towards and away from the glass sheet S, there being a shaft 2 connected axially to the piston 5 and extending through an opening in the cylinder and carrying the cutter assembly; the piston 5 and cylinder 4 having a slightly slack fit to allow passage of air between them to provide a low friction air bearing. Glass sheet S is guided towards the cutter by the inverted ramp 30, gripped before and after scoring by wheels 19 and 20, scored by wheel 14 and moved by roller 27. Wheel 14 is mounted on shaft 2 which is joined to piston 5 which is moved up or down by air pressure through lines 6 and 7. The cutter and glass surface may be lubricated by aerosol spray from device 22 via nozzle 26. A bar 11 serves as a depth stop and to maintain alignment of the cutting assembly. More than one cutter assembly may be mounted on a support bar for scoring a multiplicity of lines and means may be provided for moving the cutter transversely, at an angle, across the moving sheet for scoring transverse lines. Where more than one cutter is utilized the distance between them may be variable.
