1319374 Gear shift mechanism BRITISH LEYLAND (AUSTIN-MORRIS) Ltd 9 March 1972 [9 March 1971] 6380/71 Heading F2D A gear selector shaft 11 has grooves 12-14 for engagement by a spring-pressed detent in the neutral or gear engaged positions. One or more grooves are recessed at 16 forming shoulders 17 so that if the detent is in the form of a similarly shaped plunger its tip only will enter the grooves but where a recess 16 is provided it will be entered thus providing increased resistance to axial movement of the shaft from that position. Alternatively the detent may be in the form of a ball.
