Abstract

1316673 Casting processes SULZER BROS Ltd 7 May 1970 [8 May 1969] 22075/70 Heading B3F A method of casting comprises evacuating a mould cavity 33 admitting a gas other than air to the mould cavity, connecting the mould cavity to a melt 31 of the casting material, evacuating the mould cavity to cause the casting material to rise in the cavity, and disconnecting the cavity from the melt 31 while avoiding discharge of casting material from the cavity. The mould 2 may be mounted in a housing 1 which is evacuated through a pipe 14 and a regulating valve 18, the upper part 11 of the mould being made of porous material and provided with ducts 13. The gas is introduced into the housing 1 from storage vessels 24 and 40 and may be a protective gas, e.g. He, Ar, CO 2 , or a gas which reacts with the casting material, e.g. H 2 , CO or HCl. It may be heated before admission to the mould. The end of the inlet 6 is closed by a hood before connecting the mould cavity to the melt. The hood may be made of a material which will melt when immersed in the casting material 31. To prevent discharge of the casting material from the mould after the mould is separated from the melt, a gate or valve may be provided or the mould may be rotated so that centrifugal force causes the material to be retained on the walls of the mould cavity, or the air pressure acting on the metal in the opening 34 may be sufficient.
