Abstract

In a method and apparatus for vacuum degassing molten metal, in which gas is blown through the metal by means of a porous plug in the base of the receptacle, the rate of flow of gas is controlled in accordance with a predetermined relationship to the pressure at the surface of the molten metal. The gas may be initially introduced at a higher rate of flow which is maintained until the pressure above the molten metal has fallen to a predetermined level. Suitable forms of apparatus are described and illustrated.
