Abstract
1307422 Continuous casting GENERAL MOTORS CORP 2 3 April 1970 [26 May 1969 (2)] 19482/70 Heading B3F Low-carbon ferrous metals, and cobalt-based and nickel-based alloys are continuously cast in an open-ended mould 12 attached to a melt reservoir (not shown) by a plug 18 at the mould inlet end. The reservoir may be heated. In operation, three zones are formed within the mould, the first zone comprising a nozzle 32 of boron nitride backed up by a zirconia ring 34, in which zone the melt is completely liquid. A second zone 36, of a higher heat transfer characteristic than the first zone, is of beryllium-copper and is water-cooled. In the second zone, a thin solid skin is formed about the melt. The third zone 38 in which solidification of the melt is completed is water-cooled, 52, and graphitelined, 40. In the second zone 36 the mould is tapered towards the up-stream end of the mould to prevent the thin solid skin tearing, whilst the third zone 38 tapers non-uniformly towards the downstream end of the mould to adapt the contraction of the casting upon cooling. The casting is withdrawn incrementally in lengths equal to that of the second zone.
