Abstract

1306754 Coated products MOBIL OIL CORP 19 April 1971 [19 June 1970] 22805/71 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Resin-coated metal flakes are prepared by coating a support consecutively with a release coating, a resin which is insoluble in the solvent used to remove the release coating, a metal film and a second layer of insoluble resin, dissolving the release coating with an organic solvent and agitating the slurry of laminate formed to break up the laminate into flakes. The first layer of insoluble resin may be omitted to produce flakes coated on one side only. Preferably the metal is aluminium, especially vapour-deposited aluminium. The substrate may be polyethylene terephthalate and the release coating may be polyisobutyl methacrylate or rosin or maleinised rosin or ester gum or gelatin, or a 92/8 copolymer of methyl methacrylate and isobutyl acrylate. The isoluble resin may be an acrylonitrile/ ethyl acrylate copolymer, polyvinyl butyral or polyethylene terepthalate. The release solvent is preferably acetone. The coated flakes formed are used as components of coating compositions.
