Abstract
1370204 Coated products DAUBERT CHEMICAL CO 10 Nov 1972 [11 Nov 1971] 52045/72 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A packaging or wrapping material comprises a flexible backing having on one surface a coating comprising a copolymer, or a mixture of copolymers, or a mixture of a copolymer and a homopolymer, formed from monomers selected from C 1-18 alkyl-acrylates and-methacrylates, vinyl esters and vinyl alkyl ethers, and mixtures thereof, the copolymer or mixture having a theoretical glass transition temperature of -20C to 15C and the coating having high adhesion to itself. The glass transition temperature of the polymer can be altered to fall within the desired range by the addition of plasticiser, modifying resin or filler. In the Examples, substrates coated are polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate and kraft paper, the coatings used being (i) an ethyl acrylate/2- ethylhexyl acrylate/vinyl acetate, copolymer either alone or mixed with a n-butyl-/iso-butylmethacrylate copolymer or (ii) a methyl acrylate/2-ethylhexyl methacrylate copolymer. Numerous other monomers for forming the copolymer are specified. The coating is applied as a solution, optionally after the use of a primer, and may contain a corrosion inhibitor such as dicyclohexylammonium caprylate, palmitate or pelargonate, a number of other inhibitors also being mentioned. Corrugated paper is also mentioned as a substrate.
