Abstract

1,079,560. Casting processes. ALLEGHENY LUDLUM STEEL CORPORATION. July 13, 1965 [July 15, 1964], No. 29746/65. Heading B3F. [Also in Division F4] In a method of casting stainless steel in which the molten metal is tapped from a furnace 10 into a ladle 16 and then teemed into one or more ingot moulds 28, oxidation of the melt during tapping and teeming is prevented by purging the ladle and moulds with an inert gas such as argon prior to topping and teeming respectively and supplying a protective screen of the gas during the actual pouring from the furnace into the ladle and from the ladle into the mould. The inert gas displaces the air through openings 20 and 32 in the ladle and mould respectively. The gas is then supplied through port 38 in the furnace outlet and by means of a ring 46 positioned over the inlet to the mould. The gas being supplied through a regulator in each case. The opening in the ladle and mould are sealed with a frangible cover 22 and 34 respectively which is destroyed as the molten steel is poured. Other gases which may be used are helium, neon, krypton or xenon.
