Abstract

1292167 Testing tyres GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 8 June 1970 27569/70 Heading B7C [Also in Divisions B6 and G1] The dynamic unbalance of a tyre mounted on a wheel is measured by a force transducer and the angular position of the peak of the fundamental component of the unbalance signal is marked on the tyre. The periphery of the tyre 48 (Fig. 7), mounted on a wheel rim 50 and rotated on a shaft 51, is sensed by a feeler 52 attached to a force transducer 53. The unbalance signals are fed through filters 57, 59 to remove all but the fundamental component and the peak-to-peak value sensed and stored at 63. The testing and marking sequence is controlled by timers T1, T2 (Fig. 11). When the shaft 51 is rotated limit switches first cancel the last unbalance signal stored in 63 and then store the new peak-to-peak value. If this is excessive, unit 70 energizes a relay HR4 to stop rotation and the tyre is rejected. Otherwise relays HR1, HR2, HR3 energize timer T1 to brake the shaft 51 so that the tyre stops with the unbalance location facing a marker 1 (Fig. 2), and the solenoid windings 44a, 46a of the pneumatic supply controlling the marker are sequentially energized to cause the unbalance location to be marked. The marker 1 (Fig. 2) comprises a branding iron 14 supported on a horizontal shaft in bearings 12 located in arms 10, 11 attached to sleeves 4, 5 slidably mounted on parallel horizontal rods 7, 8. One end of the horizontal shaft carries an arm 20 attached by a spring 22 to an extension 23 of arm 11, which biases the iron 14 to a horizontal attitude against a stop bolt 33. The other end of the horizontal shaft carries a gear 24 meshing with a horizontal rack 26 attached by a rod 27 to pneumatic actuating member 28. Pressurized air is selectively applied to the ends of the actuator via lines 30, 32 as determined by the timing circuit (Fig. 11), causing the marker to dip into a wax container 16 and then move forward against a tyre to mark the location of the tyre unbalance.
