Abstract

1287269 Adjustable steering columns STANDARD-TRIUMPH MOTOR CO Ltd 28 Nov 1969 [18 Feb 1969] 8827/69 Heading B7H A support assembly for a steering column for a motor vehicle comprises a bracket 10 attached to the vehicle body and a clamp supported by the bracket and comprising two clamping members 14, 15 surrounding the column and hinged together at their top ends as at 16. A bolt 20 passes through apertures in the opposite ends of the members 14 and through holes in the arms of the bracket 10. Nuts are provided on a threaded end of the bolt and the cylindrical head 21 has a slot which receives an eccentric 27 of a shaft 26 which latter also projects through openings in a domed collar 25 surrounding the head. A handle 29 is attached to one end of the shaft 26. Consequently rotation of the shaft by the handle 29 causes either the eccentric to draw on the bolt to tighten the clamping members together or to release them whereby the column can be released to be axially adjusted and subsequently secured. Slots in both arms of the bracket through which the bolt passes also permits the column to be adjusted transversely of its length when the clamp is released. A spring 32 positioned in counterbores in the ends of the clamping members 14, 15 serves to release the clamp when the shaft 26 is rotated.
