Abstract

1279481 Working at specified temperatures; making stainless steel sheets or strips UDDE. HOLMS AB 30 May 1969 [31 May 1968] 27638/69 Headings B3A and B3V Hardenable, stainless steel sheet or strip is made by hot rolling at 600-790‹ C. but below the ACl temperature a steel containing at least 80% pearlite to cause the pearlite to be transformed to a ferritic matrix containing at least 40 spheroidized carbide grains per 100 Ám<SP>2</SP>. The steel is first hot rolled and slowly cooled in ashes to form a structure of at least 80% lamellar pearlite and optional ferrite and carbides. Thereafter the steel is hot rolled at 600-790‹ C. to final gauge without intermediate anneals in a single or five to eleven passes to form a structure which may have at least 80 carbide grains per 100 Ám.<SP>2</SP>. A reduction of area of up to 44% may be made in one pass and the total reduction may be at least 85%. After hot rolling the steel may be cold rolled and is finally hardened by cooling from an austenitizing temperature of 1100‹C. In an example, the steel contains 0À66% C, 0À38% Si, 0À45% Mn, 13À8% Cr, 0À06% Ni, 0À04% Mo and 0À063% N and may additionally contain Cu, B, Be and graphite formers such as Si, Ni or Al.
