Abstract

1451963 Rolling plates &c at speeified temperatures NIPPON STEEL CORP 19 Oct 1973 [19 Oct 1972] 48777/73 Headings B3A and B3V High toughness, high tensile strength steel plate, sheet or strip is produced from low-carbon or low-carbon low-alloy steel slab by hot-rolling with one or more reductions within a temperatture range at which recrystallization of austenite by hot rolling can occur, at least the final reduction in the temperature range being effected at a rate not less than a minimum value at the sleeted strain rate and temperature such that refinement of the austenite grains occurs at least mainly during the reduction (i.e. dynamic recrystallization), the strain rate being indicated for purposes of determining the minimum reduction by the parameter N#Ro/H, where Ro and H are respectively the radius of the reduction rolls and slab thickness before reduction in mm., and N is the speed of the rolls in r.p.m. The slab composition may include #0À30 wt. per cent C and #0À15% Nb, the temperature range being 1150-980‹ C. The steel may also include 0À01-0À70% Si and 0À70%-2À0% Mn, (C+Mn+Nb) # 1À35%. Minimum reductions for various temperatures and strain rates are given in Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), the curves of Fig. 2 being used to determine the first reduction if this is effected within the temperature range after cooling from a higher temperature. Further rolling reductions may follow between 950‹ and 880‹ C. to Ar 3 with a total reduction not less than 45% of the thickness at 950‹ C. An alternative composition includes #0À30% C, #0À70% Si, #2À0% Mn, the temperature range being 1150-850‹ C. and the reduction found from the curves of Fig. 3 (not shown). Further reductions in this case may take place between 820‹ and 800‹ C. to Ar 3 with a total reduction #20% of the thickness at 820‹ C. After rolling the steel is cooled at 8-40‹ C./sec. and coiled at 680-550‹ C. The composition may also include N#0À1%, Al#0À8%, V#0À20%, B#0À005%, Ni#1À5%, Cu#2À0%, Cr#1À0%, Ce#0À2%, Zr#0À1%, Ti (0À15%-Nb percent). Table 1 in the Specification gives a detailed composition of three of the alloys.
