Abstract

1278699 Vehicle door locks WALSALL LOCKS & CART GEAR Ltd 14 July 1970 [16 July 1969] 35808/69 Heading E2A In a lock for motor vehicle doors of the kind which include a body 10 mounting a bolt 30 movable between door latching and unlatching positions, and first and second operating members 15, 18 operable one from the exterior of the vehicle and the other from the inside of the vehicle to effect movement of the bolt, a pawl 32 is displaceable at least between first and second positions corresponding to latched and unlatched positions of the bolt, the member 15 being mounted for operative movement in a path clear of the pawl when the bolt is in a latched position and the member 18 being mounted for operative movement in a path to encounter and displace the pawl when the bolt is in a latched position; a third member 27 is displaceable by locking means at least between one position in which it completes a drive train between the member 15 and the pawl and a second position in which it is clear of the path of the member 15 and does not complete the drive train. As shown, the first operating member or bell-crank lever 15 is pivoted on a lug 16 of the lock casing plate 12, and connected to an exterior door-opening mechanism such as a push button or lever handle and the second operating member 18, pivoted on a lug 19, is moveable by an exterior button or lever handle. A pair of rods 20, 22 are connected to an externally accessible key-operated mechanism and a window sill-located button, the arrangement being such that the door may be held closed by key operation or button depression after the door has been closed. The rods are coupled to a T-lever 24 pivoted at 25 and having a slot engaging a stud 26 carried on the third member 27. A pawl 32 and a forked striker-engaging bolt 30 are pivoted respectively on pins 33, 34, the pawl having lugs 35, 36; the lug 35 lies in the path of movement of the member 18 so that during movement of that member the end 70 thereof engages and turns the pawl to take the nose 38 against the nose 40 of the bolt which allows the bolt to pivot to a door open position and under the influence of a spring-loaded plunger 42 but against the action of the plunger 43. Closing of the door causes the door striker to move the bolt and pawl to the position seen in Fig. 4. The member 27 is displaceable by the lever 24 and has a lug 47 which is projected from a slot 28 when the member is moved to the position seen in Fig. 3. The pawl 32 includes a lug 45 which abuts plunger 43 as a limit stop and lug 47 to limit travel of the member 27. A spring 50 is engageable with either side of the lobe 51 of member 27. When displaced from the position shown in Fig. 4 to that shown in Figs. 1 and 3 by actuation of the rods 20, 22, the lug 47 projects partly beyond lug 36 of pawl 32 and into alignment with end 53 of lever 15; displacement of the latter causes displacement of the lug 47 which in turn moves the pawl from the Fig. 4 to the Fig. 3 position and hence operates the bolt 30 to allow opening of the door. Return of the member 27 takes lug 47 into the slot 48 and if the lever is operated the end 53 thereof swings clear of the lug 36 and is ineffective. A child-proof catch consists in a pivoted lever 60 the end of which projects through holes in lever 18 and lug 19. Antirattle properties are provided by a skirt 63 free to flex about point 64 and a block 65 of rubber or other resilient material which is deformed by flexing of the skirt when the striker carried by the door is wedged in the space D of the bolt. The lock casing may be of moulded nylon and incorporate metal plates on which the lock components are mounted.
