* Application filed August 5, 1919, serial No, 315,472.
To all whom it may concern: 7 7 3. Be it known that I, PASQUALE BAooIo, citizen of the United States of America,
and resident of NewHaven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut,
have invented certain new and useful I m-- provements in Latches, of which the .ffol
lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to latches, and particularly to those for use on doors of automobiles, although it is also of, utility in .the latch cas ng having an escutcheonplate 1 connection with other doors;
The latches should, of course, be, made right and left, for doors on different sides of an automobile, but I,w 1ll descrlloe a single form ,of latch and thoseskilled in the art will understand the changes necessary to make it adaptable foruse on the, opposite side of an automobile An object of this invention is to produce novel means whereby a latch 'is held retracted when a door is open, and whereby the said latch is released upon closingof a door so that the latch may project and engage an escutcheon to hold the door closed. The latch operates without the application of force, and the door need not be slammed to insure action of the latch.
A still further object of this invention is toprovide a novel latch releasing device which coacts with a member so designed as to be actuated by. the movement oi the latch.
A further object of this invention is to produce a latch which may be operated in an independent manner by a handle or lever projected above the latch, the said invention also includingmeans for retracting tne handle and means for urging the latch outward. V r
With the foregoing and other objects m view, the of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, ref erence will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote correspondinvention consists in the, details 7 'pendently.
which Figure l'illustrates a view in elevation of the mechanism; of the latch 2' illustrates an edge view thereof. 7 Fig. 3 illustrates a sectional view thereof,
, Figfl illustrates detail. view of the latch. Fig. 5 illustrates top plan view of the latch holding the .loolt.- I
Fig. 6 is an edge view of the bolt'cam. In these drawings 10 denotes, a side -of 11, with an aperture 12 through whichfthe latchbolt 13 projects.- The said bolt has a recess 1 and an elongatedaperture' 15,
in which latter a stud 16 of a cam 17 pro:
j ects, the end of the cam lying. in the recess 1 L of the bolt. The bolt is further pro V vided with a recess; 16 inits side, which has a shoulder 17 at o11e;fend,-and the shoulder may be engaged by an operating lever 18 projecting through the top of the casing,
the said lever being pivoted on'the stud 18 carried bythe casing. Anti-friction rollers 19 engage the. upper and lower the bolt and constitute guidesby-which the said bolt is held in proper position.
r A spring'20 has one end anchored to a surfaces of stud 21, and the said spring bears-against the lever so that the action of the spring [tends to force the lever'in aodirection to The V move the lever toward the stop 20. spring 22 has an end bearing against the end of the bolt and the opposite end of the said spring isanchored to the stud 23. The
action ofthe spring 22 is .to urge thebolt outwardly appear); aperture 24 for the "reception of a spindle,
rotated, and when this means is supplied for actuating the rollback, handles may be applied'to the spindle and the door lock may be actuated in this manner,
partially .the lever in suchv case being omitted, al- ,though both latch operating means may be when released (as will presently The rollback 17 may have an' by which the'r ollbackmay be oscillated or presentand they may be operated inde- Therollback has a shoulder 25 engageable by a trigger26, and the trigger engages the lever and operates the lever under certaln conditions or is operated by the lever under tion to the casing and an end of the bolt is; adapted to project through an aperture 28 of the casing; The bolt terminates in a beveled or camming end 29, which projeotion is adapted to engage a camming lug 30 on the keeper plate 31, and the keeper plate is secured in a suitable manner to the door frame. The keeper plate has a latch gu de 32, which consists in an inwardly extending flange at the side of an aperture 33 in said keeper plate. Thebolt 27 hasa slot 27 to receive a guide 27 and a spring 27 lies in the slot between the stop and the end 27 of the bolt and presses said bolt outwardly.
The operation of the device will, it is thought, be understood from the foregoing description, but itmay be proper to add that when the latch is retracted and the door is opened, the trigger is forced by the spring 27 into engagemeent with the shoulder 25 and the latch is held retracted during the time the door is open. This is desirable, as itremoves any projecting device on the door which might COHlG'lll contact with clothing. Vhen the door is closed the trigger bolt is operated by reason of this engagementjwith the cam lug 30 and the trigger releases the shoulder 25, permitting the springs to reset the bolt in locked position, and this relation of parts will be maintained until the door is again opened.
I claim:
1. In a latch, a casingg aboltslidable therein, means for urging the bolt outwardly, a rollback having a shoulder, means for operatively connecting the rollback and latch whereby they move in unison, a trigger bolt slidable in the'casing and projecting therefrom, means for holding the trigger bolt projected, means for retractingthe trigger bolt, a trigger carried by the trigger bolt and adapted to engage the shoulder of the rollback when the bolt is retracted, and means for retracting the bolt. I
2. In a latch, a casing, a bolt slidable therein and adapted to project therefrom, a rollback mounted in the casing and operativelyconnected to the bolt, said rollback having a shoulder on its outer edge, a latch bolt slidably mounted in the casing and adapted to project therefrom, means for urg mg the trigger bolt outwardly, a' trigger carried by the said bolt and adapted to engage the shoulder of the rollback when the 7 bolt is retracted, a memberadapted to engage-the projecting end of the trigger bolt to force it inwardly to cause a disengagement of the latch-and the rollback, a lever pivotally connected to the casing and extending past the bolt in engagement therewith to operate said bolt, means for urging the bolt outwardly, and means for pressing the lever for swinging it on its pivot when the bolt is released. v
