(ci. 292-165) `This invention` relates to improvements in locks. It is an object` of the invention to provide a very narrow lock of the type wherein both a latch bolt and an auxiliary bolt are provided,` the` latter operating, when forced inwardly by a striker plate, to prevent inward movement of the latch bolt andthus disengagement of the latterfrom a recess formed in the striker plate, until the said latch bolt is `released by engaging means within the casing through actuation of suitable release means operable from one side or the other of the casing.
At the present time there are locks wherein inward movement of the main latch bolt is` prevented after the auxiliary bolt has been forced inwardly, but heretofore the construction and combination of parts required` for retracting the latch bolt have been such as to necessitate quite a wide lock casing. Now it has become common practice to utilize doors consisting of narrow rectangular frames, such as those wherein central transparent panels are mounted, and the problem therefore has been to construct a lock of the above mentioned type narrow enough to permit its use in `such doors. `Another object of the invention is to provide such a lock including olset means for retracting the latch bolt from inside the door so that the operators fingers are not liable to be pinched between actuating means and the opened or closed- Having thus brieily stated some of the objects and advantages of the invention I will now describe it in detail with the aid of the accompanying drawings, in which:`

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a casing having a removable cover 2 secured thereon `as by screws 2a. One side of the casing 1 is formed bya plate 3 suitably fastened to the said casing as by screws 4. This plate 3, which is adapted to be mounted substantially ush with adjacent margin of the door frame as the door is being but with the latch u ce one vertical edge face of a door indicated at 5, projects at its upper extremity and its lower extremity beyond the casing 1 and is apertured at 6 for the passage of screws 6a by which the casing is secured to the door 5. Formed through the plate 3 intermediately of its length are two vertically spaced openings 7 and 8. `Formed transversely through the wall 9 of the casing opposite the cover 2 are two parallel elongated slots 10 and 11 the longitudinal center lines of which are in alignment with the horizontal center lines through the openings 7 and 8 respectively, and extending` inwardly from the side 17 of the casing opposite the plate 3 are pins 12 and 13 in axial alignment with the said center lines of the slots 10 and 11 respectively. Adjacent their upper extremities the wall 9 and the cover 2 are inwardly stepped toward one another as shown at 9a and 2b respectively thereby rendering the upper extremity of the casing thinner and forming a transverse shoulder 14 within the casing intermediately of its height and across the lower extremity of the inwardly stepped portion 9a. Formed through the underside of the casing 1 intermediately of its width is an Y aperture 15. Projecting inwardly from and integral with the wall 9 and spaced a short distance above the aperture 15 is a transverse stop 16.
Extending inwardly from the wall 9 adjacent the side 17 of the casing and adjacent the underside of the slot 11 is a pivot pin 18 on which a rocker bar 19 is mounted. The lower extremity of the rocker bar extends downwardly beneath its pivot mounting and is urged away from the side 17 of the casing by a spring 2), one extremity of which is seated in an opening formed in the rocker bar, so that the lower extremity of the bar is urged to a downwardly and inwardly inclined position away from the casing side 17, at which time the bottom of the bar projects inwardly somewhat over the aperture 15. However when an actuating member 21, mounted for vertical movement between opposed guides 15a which fonn upward extensions of the sides of the aperture 15, is raised it contacts the lower inner edge of the rocker bar 19 and forces the lower extremity of the latter toward the casing side 17 against the tension of the spring 20. The upper portion of the actuating member 21 is laterally oiset toward the wall 9 of the casing thereby preventing accidental disengagement of the member from the casing and providing on its side adjacent the cover 2 a transverse abutment 22. Formed in the top of the member 21 is .a vertical opening 23 to receive the lower extremity of a helical spring 25 the upper extremity of which rests against the stop 16 whereby the member 21 is normally retained beneath the lower extremity of the rocker bar 19. Intermediately of its height and substantially in horizontal alignment with its pivot mounting the bar 19 is offset `transversely of the casing and its upper extremity extends substantially vertically in proximity to the plate 3. upper end of the rocker bar 19 is toward the cover 2. The front of this lug rests against the plate 3 when the spring 2.0 is compressed and the lower extremity of the rocker bar lies immediately adjacent the side 17 of the casing 1, and. when the lower a lug 2S which projects `extremity of the rocker bar is moved forward by the spring 20 the lug comes to rest rearwardly of the plate 3 against the shoulder 14. Formed integral with the rocker bar intermediately of its length and also extending toward the cover 2 is an angle-shaped projection 26, which has a substantially vertical leg extending upwardly adjacent the plate 3 and a substantially horizontal leg extending toward the side 17 of the casing.

Extending around the inner extremity of the latch bolt 27 and integral therewith is a flange 30 a portion of which forms a tongue 31 which projects into the slot and is slidable therein so that the latch bolt throughout its movement is guided by the said slot and by the opening 7. Formed on the flange 3G both above and beneath the tongue 31 and in vertical alignment with the latter are bearing faces 32 which slide upon the inner face of the wall 9. Forwardly from the flange the side of the latch bolt adjacent the wall 9 is adapted to `slide over the rocker bar 19, as shown in Figure 13. Formed in the underside of the latch bolt 27 intermejdiatelyl of its length is a recess 33 into which the substantially vertical leg of the projection 26 is adapted l to extend to prevent rearward movement of the said bolt, as shown in Figure 7, and formed in the side of the bolt adjacent the cover 2 intermediately of its length is a depressed face 34. The latch bolt 27 is urged outwardly through the opening 7 by a coil spring 35 one extremity of which extends into a cavity 36 formed in the back of the latch bolt and the opposite extremity of the spring rests against the side 17 of the casing where it is retained in position by the pin 12 which it encircles.
37 denotes an auxiliary bolt mounted for reciprocating movement in the casing 1 through the plate opening 3, and extending laterally from the side of the auxiliary bolt adjacent the wall 9 is a tongue 3S slidable in the slot 11, which, together with the opening 8, guides the bolt 37 throughout its movement. The remainder of the face of the bolt 37 from which the tongue 38 extends is flat to slide across the rocker bar 19. The face 39 of the rear portion of the auxiliary bolt 37 adjacent the cover 2 is in vertical alignment with the depressed face 34- of the latch bolt 27. from the auxiliary bolt 37 and formed in the front of that projection is a horizontal recess 41 the top of which is defined by a forwardly disposed finger 41a adapted to engage and depress the rearwardly extending leg of the projection 25 as the bolt 37 is moved forward. When the projection 26 is thus engaged the rocker bar 19 is so positioned that the spring 20 is compressed. Extending upwardly from the projection at the rear of the latter is a lip 42 which is located above and behind the rear lower extremity of the latch bolt 27. Consequently upon inward movement of the latch bolt the auxiliary bolt 37 is moved inwardly, and the bolt 37 is free to be moved inwardly while the latch bolt 27 remains at its outwardly projecting position. Formed also in the rear of the auxiliary bolt 37 is an aperture 43 to receive one extremity of a heli-cal spring 44 the opposite extremity of which rests against the side 17 of the casing and is retained in position thereagainst by the pin 13 which it encircles.
Projecting into. the casing 1 from the wall 9 thereof adjacent the side 17,v and parallel with and beneath the pin 18, is a pivot pin 45 which may also extend into the cover 2 to form a dowel for the latter. Mounted on the pin 45 is a lever arm 46 which is adapted to swing across the faces 34 and 39 of the bolts 27 and 37 respectively, and secured to the lower extremity of the lever arm is a leaf spring 47 which bears against the inner face of the casing side 17v and tends to force the upper extremity of the lever arm toward the plate 3.. Formed across the lowerY extremity of the lever arm is a heel 48 which, whenv the actuating member 21 is raised between the. guides 15a in a manner hereinafter set forth, is contacted by the abutment 22 so that the said arm is swung about its axis from the position shown in Figure 7 to that shown in Figure 9.
If both bolts 27 and 37 project forwardly through the plate 3 and inward pressure is exerted either against the latch bolt 27 alone or against both the bolts 27 and .37 they vmove inwardly together. Rearward movement of the latch bolt 27 is then possible because when both bolts project forward the horizontaliportion of the projection 26 An upward projection 4@ extends n is engaged by the recess 41 in the bolt 37 and therefore the rocker bar 19 cannot turn above its axis and move the vertical portion of the said projection into engagement with the recess 33 in the underside of the latch bolt Z7; and disengagement of the horizontal portion of the projection 26 from the recess 41 does not occur until after the latch bolt 27 has travelled suciently far rearwardly to prevent engagement of its recess 33 by the vertical portion of the said projection 26.
If the auxiliary bolt 37 is moved inwardly alone then the rocker bar turns and the latch bolt is held against inward movement by engagement of its recess by the vertical portion of the projection 26. However if the auxiliary bolt 37 is held at its inward position, as by the striker plate 28 and the latch bolt projects outwardly, upward movement of the actuating member 21 turns the rocker bar 19 about its pivot axis against the tension of the spring 2d, so that the projection 26 is moved forwardly and downwardly thereby disengaging the recess 33 and `releasing the latch bolt 2'7 for rearward movement by the lever arm 46. As soon as upward pressure against the actuating member 21 is released the lever'arm 46 is returned to its position shown in Figure 7 by the spring '47; the actuating member 21 is returned to its bottom position by the spring 24, thereby permitting the lower extremity of the rocker bar 19 to swing inwardly; and both bolts 27 and 37 are urged toward their outwardly projecting positions by the springs 35 and 44 respectively.
Rotatably mounted in aligned apertures formed in the wall 9a and the cover portion 2b is a bushing 49 closed at its inner extremity 50 and formed across the closed extremity is a diametral slot S1. Mounted for rotation in the outer side of the door 5 in front of the bushing 49 is ar conventional rim type cylinder lock 52 having a rearwardly projecting member of rectangular cross section 53 which extends through the slot 51 and is rotated in the usual manner when the lock 52 is turned by a key (not shown). Thus rotation of the lock 52 imparts rotation to the bushing 49. Projecting radially from and integral with the bushing 49 is a camming arm 54 which, as the bushing is turned in a clockwise direction (Figures 7 and 8) first contacts the inner side of the lug 25 and Y forces it forward toward the plate 3, thereby moving the projection 26 so that it releases the recess 33, and upon continued rotation the camming arm contacts the upwardly projecting portion of the flange 30V and forces the latch bolt inwardly to its position shown in Figure 8. Thus by rotation of the bushing 49, operated from one side of the door, or by upward movement of the actuating member 21, operated from the other side, the latch bolt 27 may be retracted.
Since these locks are primarily intended for use on doors having narrow annular frames in which they are mounted special offset operating means are provided. This operating means for attachment to the inner face of a door includes a handle which is offset and sufliciently spaced from the door frame to eliminate the possibility of the users fingers being pinched between the handle and the said frame as the door is being opened or closed.
The assembly including a flat mounting 56 secured on the inner side of the door 5 somewhat below the casing 1. This mounting is relatively wide and integral with and projecting downwardly from its side remote from the door frame 57 is a handle 58 which isforwardly looped intermediately of its height and has its lower extremity outwardly curved toward the adjacent vertical margin of the door 5. Formed both on the inner face of the mounting 56 and on the lower extremity of the handle 58 are bosses 60 which project into suitable openings formed in the door. These bosses are tapped longitudinally from their outer extremities to receive screws 61 which are inserted from the inside of the door. f
interposed between the mounting 56 and the Adoor 5 is a bearing plate 62 which is held in position both by one one extremity of which a latch 67 is secured which projects through the slot 65, and integral with the opposite end of the shanty; is` an inwardly projecting trigger member 6ft which extends beneath the actuating member 21, so that when downward pressure is exerted upon the latch 57 to shank 66 is turned and the trigger member is raised to lift said actuating member. Formed through the bearing plate 62 are spaced slots 69 through one of which the trigger member 63 extends. Thus the bearing plate holds the operating means in assembly prior to its attachment upon a door.
While in the foregoing the preferred embodiment of the invention has been described and shown, it is understood that alterations and modifications may be made thereto provided the said alterations and modifications fall within the scope ofthe appended claim.
What I claim is:
A loclr comprising a casing having its front and rear sides relatively close together, the front side having vertically spaced openings therethrough, a latch bolt and an auxiliary bolt mounted for parallel movement in the casing one through each aperture, a spring extending between the rear side of the casing and the adjacent end of each bolt urging it outwardly through its aperture, a rocker bar pivoted in the casing adjacent the rear side, the lower extremity of the rocker bar beneath its pivot axis extending substantially parallel with said rear side, the intermediate portion of the rocker bar above its pivot axis extending transversely of the casing, and the upper portion of the roclter arm extending upwardly therefrom substantially parallel with and adjacent the front side of the casing across both of said bolts, a projection on said upper portion adapted to engage a recess formed in the latch bolt to prevent retraction thereof, a spring extending between the rear side of the casing and the lower extremity of the rocker bar tending to retain the projection in engagemeut with said recess, a lever arm pivoted on the casing adjacent the lower extremity of the rocker bar, said arm extending across the auxiliary bolt and across a central depressed portion of the latch bolt, spring means urging the latch bo-lt forwardly across said depressed portion, an actuating member mounted for limited straight line movement through the casing, and projecting outwardly therefrom, spring means urging: the member outwardly, said member being so positioned that when moved inwardly it first moves the lower extremity of the bar rearwardly about its axis to disengage the projection from the latch bolt and then moves the lever rearwardly into engagement with a shoulder formed across the rear. of the depressed central portion of the latch bolt to retract said bolt, a lip on the auxiliary bolt, and a flange on the latch bolt which upon rearward movement engages the lip and retracts the auxiliary bolt.
