Abstract

[Also in Division F1] A pressure relieving device set in a container wall 13 comprises a flexible closure diaphragm 9 secured at its centre by means including a retaining member, e.g. a wire 17 having a limited resistance to applied tension whereby in use a predetermined increase in container pressure results in rupture of the wire 17 and of the diaphragm being forced against cutters 10 and container pressure being relieved. The central area of the diaphragm is perforated and is secured to a cylindrical housing having a seat 28 for a piston valve 29 urged closed by a spring 30 and connected by the wire 17 to a clamp 11 formed by ribs 5, 6. A small pressure increase results in upward movement of the diaphragm 9 and, cylindrical housing so as to unseat valve 29 whilst a greater pressure results in breaking of wire 17 and rupture of diaphragm 9. A conical plate 2 with apertures 7 limits inward movement of the diaphragm.
