Abstract
1,269,251. Rotary tool heads. SIR JAMES FARMER NORTON & CO. Ltd. 22 Jan., 1970 [5 Feb., 1969], No. 6261/69. Heading B3T. In a rotary cutter head having an annular body portion 20 in which are radially located a plurality of carrier members 24 for steady rollers and at least one cutting tool 27, means is provided for releasably clamping the carriers in the body. In one embodiment the clamping means for each carrier is constituted by a rotatable spindle member 41, located in the body and extending parallel to the axis of the cutter head and which co-operates with a recess 39 in the carrier. The spindle 41 is provided with a recess 42 having a depth equal to the radius of the spindle and extending axially along the spindle whereby rotation of the spindle to a position where the recess clears the carrier permits the carrier to be removed from the body. Similarly, after insertion of the carrier in the body, rotation of the spindle to engage the solid portion thereof in the recess 39 effects clamping of the carrier in the body 20. To ensure that the cutter head cannot be put into operation without the carriers being securely clamped in position electrical switch means may be incorporated to indicate when clamping has not been effected (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown). The carriers for both steady rollers and the cutting tool(s) are provided with screw adjustment means to facilitate the correct positioning of the tool(s) and rollers prior to operation.
