Abstract
1,133,787. Grinding. SOC. DES LUNETIERS. 17 June, 1966 [28 June, 1965], No. 27241/66. Heading B3D. - A machine for automatically trimming spectacle lenses comprises a lens carrier driven at a relatively slow rotational speed and a grinding wheel driven at a relatively high rotational speed urged against each other, the penetration of the grinding wheel into the lens contour being limited by a fixed follower solid with the grinding wheel mounting and adapted to contact a templet fastened to the lens carrier, and reversing means adapted to reverse the direction of rotation of the lens carrier as a function of the relative positions of the follower and templet. As the lens and templet are rotated, the grinding wheel penetrates the lens V from an initial point O to a point A and an electrical contact is made between the follower and templet to effect reversal of rotation of the lens and templet so that grinding proceeds along an arc AB and thereafter arcs BC and CD. When the time lag between two contact points, say CD is below a predetermined value, reversal is prevented and the lens and templet rotated for grinding of the other side of the lens. In another embodiment, the reversal points A 1 -A 4 , Fig. 5, are controlled by a timer. In a further embodiment, the follower T, Fig. 4, is carried by a resilient blade R from a structure which supports a resilient feeler I and the reversal of the lens carrier and templet is controlled by contact pulses between the feeler and follower, such reversal only being effected when the thickness S of material on the lens to be removed exceeds a predetermined value.
