[Also in Divisions F2 and G2-G3] Displacement of contour follower 41 causes valve member 40 to vary differentially the flow from nozzles 45, 50 and the nozzle back pressures are applied via 23, 24 to annular chambers 6, 7 in fixed piston 25 to distort diaphragm 3, clamped at 4, 5, relative to nozzles 12, 13. The latter are in series flow relation in path 17, 15, 14, 8, 18, 19, 9 and 21 (exhaust), and the diaphragm accordingly acts to control admission to and exhaust from the head end 19 of cylinder 27 in accordance with movement of follower 41. The rod end 15 of the cylinder is at constant supply pressure. The nozzles 45, 50 move with cylinder 27 to provide position feedback. Valve member 40 is carried by springs 56, 57 connected to the cylinder. Pressure changes in head end 19 caused by variations in the load on tool 60 are effective on the diaphragm via 18, 8 to cause compensating distortion thereof. The diaphragm may alternatively be clamped between balls mounted in cages and surrounded by seal rings.
