Abstract

1467505 Throttling in hydraulic dampers; valves DAIMLER-BENZ AG 22 May 1974 [26 May 1973] 22939/74 Headings F2S and F2V An hydraulic damper comprises two working chambers 4, 5 with valves 8, 12 between them, and a path 24, 25, 39, 38, 40, 26, 27 by-passing the valves, the cross-section of the by-pass being reduced automatically on an increase in pressure in either chamber by movement of a spring biased valve piston 34 which has a face subject to the pressure in one chamber, and a face subject to the pressure in the other chamber. As shown the valve piston 34 is also responsive to a control pressure dependent on vehicle loading, supplied via a passage 56 in the piston rod 2 to control chamber 55. The pressure in working chamber 4 is communicated to control chamber 49, and that in working chamber 5 to control chamber 52. Other faces of the valve piston 34 are exposed to atmospheric pressure. The control pressures in chambers 49 and 52 cause the valve piston 34 to move in dependence on the oscillation velocity of the main piston 3. As the piston 34 moves, the control edge 58 of a groove 38 in the piston constricts the parts 39, 40. A spring 41 biases the piston 34 to the position shown where the parts 39, 40 are not constricted. Considering operation for a given vehicle loading, with increasing oscillation velocity the bypass becomes more and more restricted and then the valves 8, 12 open.
