In a centrifugal pump having a shaft sealing ring 4 which is resiliently urged, as by springs 5, against a mating ring 3 when the shaft 14 is stationary, Fig. 4, and is lifted therefrom by centrifugally actuated weights 8 during operation, Fig. 3, the weights 8 comprise spheres disposed between recesses 16 and 17 in annular discs 13 and 7 respectively, the disc 13 being fixed to the shaft and the disc 7 being slidable on the shaft and the outer surfaces of the recesses being conical whereby as the spheres 8 move radially under centrifugal force the discs are forced apart and bolts 10 which are secured to the disc 7 and pass through holes in the disc 13 and in a lift-off ring 9 lift the ring 4 during pump operation. The recesses 16, 17 are divided into segments (19, Fig. 2) by circumferentially spaced radial webs (18). A bellows 21 extends between the ring 4 and a ring 23 which is held by a clamp ring 22 and sealingly engages both a sleeve 12 on the shaft and the disc 13. The springs 5 are compressed between the ring 22 and a guide ring 24 which abuts the sealing ring 4. During operation, shaft leakage is prevented by blading 27 and 28 on the pump impeller 1 and a further impeller 2, respectively. In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), the ring (4) is urged towards ring (3) by a resilient ring (33).
