Abstract

756,725. Stuffing-box substitutes. CRANE PACKING, Ltd. July 28, 1953 [April 30, 1952], No. 10862/52. Class 122(5) In a face-type mechanical seal in which a sealing ring rotating with a shaft is in facial sealing contact with a non - rotatable seating ring accommodated in the shaft housing, the sealing and seating rings are radially aligned by being both guided or located by the shaft or the housing and at least one of them is sealed to the shaft by a resilient packing ring slidable or rollable between parallel surfaces. A segmental seating ring 19, Fig. 1, is encircled by a split clamping ring 23 having a radial flange 24 abutting the rear face of the ring and a tapered flange 25 bearing, through a gasket 33, or a complementary shoulder 34 on the ring 19 that is coupled by pins 27 with a check ring 11 and urged into facial contact with a seating 'ring 36 by springs 31 projecting from the cheek ring and abutting the clamping ring 23. The check ring 11 encircles a bearing sleeve 10 closely fitting the rotatable shaft 1, is divided in halves clamped together by bolts 13 and has a transverse groove 14 engaged by a pin 15 projecting inwardly from the seal housing 3. The sealing ring 36 is also formed in halves held together by a split annular band 38 having tapered surfaces 37 engaging on complementary surfaces on the ring 36 and rotatably connected by bolts 39 with a drive disc 40 secured to the shaft by a screw 41. The sealing ring 36 is sealed to the shaft by packing rings 45 and the sleeve 10 is sealed to the housing 3 and the seating ring 19 .by elastic packing rings 17 and 20 respectively which are preferably of rubber but may be of fabric or plastic or spring metal. In a modification (Fig. 2), a sealing ring 58, encircled by a sectional clamping ring 59, is rotatably connected by pins 60 with a sleeve 52 which is mounted in a tubular guide portion 49 of the seal housing 47 and connected by driving pins 53, engaging slots 54 in the sleeve, with a drive disc 55 secured to the shaft 56 by a screw 63. The sealing ring 58 is urged by springs 67 into contact with a seating ring 68 mounted in the inner end of the housing 47. A second seating ring 69, encircled by a sectional clamping ring 70 connected to the outer end cover 48 of the seal housing by stop pins 71, is sealed to the cover by a packing ring 74 and urged into sealing contact with the outer end of the sleeve 52 by springs 72. The sleeve 52 is sealed to the sealing ring 58 and to the drive disc 55 by elastic packing rings 65 and 62 respectively.
