Abstract

1,245,915. Rolling; breaking. VEREINIGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISEN-UND STAHLWERKE A.G. 5 March, 1970 [1 April, 1969], No. 10541/70. Headings B3E and B3M. A method of preventing damage to a hot strip-finishing train, having six rolling mill stands 1-6, caused by the leading end of the strip becoming stuck in one of the rolling mill stands 1-3 or in one of their guides 11-13 comprises sensing the time taken for the leading end of the strip to move between two adjacent stands by means of ammeters 61-63 and, in response to a prolonged transit time, a timer 10, 20 or 30 actuates a control unit A. The control unit A actuates flying shears 8, the reversal of roller bed 7 and the drive means to open the nips between those rolling mill stand rolls which engage the stock. Thus the cut off strip section is condensed between the point where sticking has occurred and the stand immediately preceding that point since the roll driving means are not stopped. The remaining strip leaves the rolling mill train 7 and the condensed strip is removed in a known manner. When the end sticking occurs in the nip between the rolls of any of stands 1-3, their motor protecting switches 51-53 actuate the control unit A. If the leading end of the strip sticks in one of the guides 14-16 of the rear rolling mill stands 4-6 a timer 40 or 50 is triggered by an ammeter 64, 65 or 66 to operate the control unit B. When sticking has occurred in one of stands 4-6 the control unit B is operated by the corresponding motor protection switches 54-56. On actuation of unit B it initiates the reversal of roller bed 7 and of scale breaker 9 and by the switch 51 de-energizes the drive means of the first frame 1. The continued operation of the remaining stands which precede the point where sticking has occurred causes the strip to be torn between stands 1 and 2 after which all nips between the working rolls engaging the strip are opened. When the severed strip section has been condensed between the point where sticking has occurred and the stand immediately preceding that point it is removed in a, known manner.
