A reversing rolling mill is provided with a conventional screw-down mechanism 14 and an additional hydromechanical screwdown. If, during rolling, the rolls are overloaded, quick drain valves 16 and 16a are automatically opened to reduce the rolling pressure and the conventional screwdown is quickly released. The motor for the rolls can also be put into reverse to free a workpiece from the rolls, should the motor be stalled. The conventional mechanical screwdown includes a motor 21 (Fig. 2, not shown) driving screws 14 and 14a by way of pinions 20 and 20a. Jacks 3 and 3a, which each include an electric motor driven plunger 5 movable in a bore 6 to force fluid into a jack 8, normally have motors interconnected by a clutch 10. An overload on the rolls either actuates a manometer 17 or 17a, or a torque measuring instrument on the mill motor, to send out a signal opening drain valves 16 and 16a, to release the pressure in jacks 8 and 8a to effect release of the mechanical screwdown. The invention is applicable to 2 or 4 high strip or blooming mills. To remove the mill rolls, rails 18 and 18a are pivoted into a vertical position for co-operation with rollers 19 and 19a, the jacks 8 and 8a first lifting the rolls ready for lowering on to the rails.
