Abstract

1,245,908. Waste-disposal apparatus. SOMAT CORP. 2 Feb., 1970 [20 Feb., 1969], No. 4967/70. Heading B2A. A waste-disposal unit comprises a cylindrical tank 10, 11, Fig. 1, to receive waste material and water, a motor which drives a rotatable disc-shaped impeller 15 in the tank, spaced from the wall of the tank and provided with disintegrating-teeth 21 on its surface, a tubular sieve 12 surrounding the impeller 15, a first shear member 22 projecting upwardly from the upper surface of the impeller 15, a second stationary shear-member 24 spaced from the first, and a baffle 20 in the tank spaced from the second shear member to deflect flow of material in the tank towards the edge of the second shear member. The second shear member 24 is attached to a flange 23 which projects outwardly from the upper edge of the sieve 12. The angle B, Fig. 3, made between the members 22, 24 is between 35‹ and 55‹ so that material, e.g. plastics is cut progressively (i.e. in scissors fashion), and does not block the apparatus. The blade 22 is sloped to deflect uncuttable material. Comminuted material is discharged at 26 and pumped to an extractor (not shown) whence excess water is returned to the comminuting apparatus. A valve 27 permits the apparatus to be drained.
