Abstract
1288529 Joint-making packing WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 27 May 1971 [8 July 1970] 17526/71 Heading B2F [Also in Division B8] A seal between a flange 11, Fig. 3, of a nuclear reactor pressure vessel and a flange 12 of a closure head comprises at least one annular groove 15, 16 for an 0-ring 13, 14 in the vessel flange, and a retaining ring 21, 22 which is provided with a ledge 23 disposed to underlie the 0-ring and a lip 25, 27 disposed in an annular groove in the closure head flange, the structure providing for handling and supporting the 0-ring. As shown, a pair of metallic tubular 0-rings coated with silver are employed, holes 17 being provided in the high pressure side to aid sealing and prevent collapse. To replace the seals, every time the nuclear reactor is refueled, a portable handling ring 28, Fig. 1, is provided, this being lowered on to the vessel flange 11 after removal of the closure head. The handling ring 28 is provided with eight lifting cams 31 equi-spaced around the ring and rotatable through 90 degrees to locking position shown under the lips 25, 27 by means of fluid pressure rotary actuators 34, preferably pneumatic. Three lifting lugs (36), Fig. 6 (not shown), are provided on the handling ring for manipulation by a crane and four slots (37) aid alignment on the vessel flange. The handling ring together with the captured retaining rings 21, 22 and 0-rings is lifted off the vessel flange and carried to a stationary ring (29), Fig. 5 (not shown), where it is seated and aligned by three pins (30). The lifting cams 31 are rotated to the release position and the handling ring removed to expose the retaining rings and O- rings which can then be removed by hand tools (46) inserted in radial slots (47) in the stationary ring, to ensure separation a hold-down force is applied to the retaining rings by means of eight air cylinders (42) which are mounted on the handling ring and actuate hold-down pins (41) through pistons (44).
