Abstract

1,242,564. Vehicle washing apparatus. D. C. HANNA. 3 Sept., 1968 [13 Nov., 1967], No. 41812/68. Heading B7J. A vehicle washing apparatus comprises rotatable brush means 22, Fig. I, mounted on an arm 24 which is pivoted to a second arm 26 pivoted to a support in the form of a frame 38 and adjustable biasing means 28, 30, 32 acting on the arms 24, 26, so that in use the brush 22 moves over three adjacent faces of a moving vehicle being washed. The biasing means comprises a spring 28 attached to a plate 102 on the arm 24 connected to a cable 32 which passes round a pulley 34 attached to a bracket 40 which is movable on a channel member 36. The cable passes over a pulley 42 and is attached to a counterweight 30 which is suspended in a tube 44. The brush is driven by a motor 74 through a chain 78 and sprockets 80, 82. In use a vehicle, moving upwards as viewed in Fig. 1, contacts the brush, and swings the arms 24, 26 against the action of the counterweight 30, until the brush 22 reaches the right front corner of the vehicle. The brush 22 now engages the right side of the vehicle, the arm 24 folding back along the arm 26 which returns to its normal position against a cushioned stop 98. When the right rear corner of the vehicle is reached the arm 24 swings out across the rear of the vehicle until it engages the stop 100 on the arm 26. The spring 28 absorbs sudden shocks and a shock absorber 101 damps the folding movement of the arm 24. In further arrangements, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), a fixed rotatable brush may clean the left side of the vehicle, and a device similar to that shown in Fig. 1, but with arms sufficiently longer than arms 24, 26, so that in the normal position the brush (222) is aligned with the lefthand corner portion of the vehicle, cleans the remaining three sides of the vehicle.
