Abstract
1,236,711. Change-speed gear. SOC. ANON. FRANCAISE DU FERODO. 25 Feb., 1969 [27 Feb., 1968], No. 10097/69. Heading F2D. A stepped-planet bevel train providing four reduced ratios, direct drive and two reverse, has one side-wheel A clutchable to input 10 through either of two, three, four or more different-ratio spur gear paths 15, 16, 19, 20 or 15, or 15, 16, 18 and clutches S 2 ,S 1 respectively; a planet-carrier B, brakable at Far for the reverse ratios, or clutchable to input 10 through a clutch M and single-ratio spur path 15, 16, 18; a second side-wheel C permanently connected to the final output 11 through a spur pair 21, 22; and a third side wheel D brakable at Fav. All are simple ratios except the fourth forward which is torque-split by engaging the clutch M to drive the planet carrier B through the spur train 15, 16, 18, and the clutch S 2 to drive the side-wheel A simultaneously at a higher speed through spur path 15, 16, 19, 20. The clutch S 1 has capacity for only a half to a third of maximum engine torque, and is assisted by parallel one-way clutches. Gear ratios and wheel sizes are specified for three examples. Control may be manual or unspecified automatic and the driving engine may be transverse, and drive the gear through an hydraulic torque-converter or coupling.
