A variable-ratio gearing between an engine 11, e.g. diesel, and vehicle driven wheels comprises a direct drive one-way, e.g. sprag, clutch 12 in parallel with an overdrive drive train including selectively fillable fluid coupling means, a common output shaft 22 of said direct clutch and said overdrive train being connected to said vehicle wheels through gearing which may comprise a plurality of gear-boxes mounted on separate axles or, as shown, a single, axle- or frame-mounted, gear-box 14 housing a gear train 15 which may comprise direction-reversing means. The fluid coupling means comprises a single fluid coupling 18, 19 as shown, or parallel fluid couplings which are filled only one at a time and provide different ratios. The engine is connected to a common input member 17 of the direct clutch and the overdrive train through an hydraulic torque converter 10 which may be bridged by a direct mechanical connection. The torque converter output may be connected to the common input member 17 directly or, as shown, through a shaft 13 or serially connected shafts. Filling of the fluid coupling for overdrive therethrough, the one-way clutch releasing, and bridging of the torque converter may be controlled manually or automatically depending on vehicle wheel tractive effort and speed requirements.
