Abstract
1,233,522. Patenting steel rod. HUTTENWERK OBERHAUSEN A. G. June 15, 1969 [Feb. 15, 1968], No. 2352/69. Heading C7A. On leaving the mill the rod is so cooled that its cooling curve when plotted on T-T-T diagram intersects the austenite - ferrite transformation line within 10 seconds, and is then cooled in a fluidized bed at an average rate of at least 20 C. / second to a transformation temperature in the range 480 -580 C.; preferably the rod is then held at that temperature for about 10 seconds. The initial cooling may be carried out in a fluidized bed, and in either stage the rod may be treated while formed into overlapping turns on a conveyer. As exemplified a steel containing 0À66% C, 0À23% Si, 0À76% Mn, 0À019% P, and 0À029% S was rolled to 5À5 mm. at 1000C., and entered the reel at 800 C. where it was laid into turns on a conveyer; within 2 seconds of leaving the last stand of the mill the rod was cooled to 520 C. at an average of 43 C. /second, and was held at that temperature for 12 seconds.
