Abstract

1,206,988. Making cable. HœTTENWERK OBERHAUSEN A.G. 2 Aug., 1968 [7 Aug., 1967], No. 36887/68. Heading B3A. [Also in Division C7] Steel cable is formed from wire containing at least 0À3% of carbon, the steel having been rolled in the austenitic state, cooled from the rolling temperature to below the austeniteferrite line of the iron-carbon diagram within 10 seconds and then at an average rate of at least 20‹ C. per second to a transformation temperature in the range 480‹-580‹ C. at which it is held for a short period. Preferably the initial cooling is effected by water-quench. ing, followed by cooling to the transformation temperature and soaking in a fluidized bed. As exemplified a steel containing 0À58% C, 0À38% Mn, 0À24% Si, 0À012% P and 0À020% S was rolled to 5.5 mm. at 800‹ C., cooled to 520‹ C. at an average rate of 40‹ C. per second, and held there for about 20 seconds; it was then drawn with about 90% reduction and the wire used to make cable.
