Abstract

1361715 Grinding W D NAISMITH 18 April 1973 [26 April 1972] 19363/72 Heading B3D Cam grinding apparatus comprises a frame 10 adapted to be pivotally mounted between the headstock 5 and tailstock 6 of a grinding machine, workpiece holding means so arranged on the frame to carry a cam workpiece 23 with its axis parallel to the headstock-tailstock axis, means 15 to drive the workpiece holding means, a master cam holding means 35 associated with the workpiece holding means and arranged to carry a master cam 30a in engagement with a guide surface 32 whereby the frame pivots about its mountings to carry the workpiece towards and away from the grinding wheel 24 of the machine in accordance with the master cam on rotation of the workpiece. The frame 10 has a headstock end plate 11 which rotatably supports a shaft 13 for connection to the headstock 5 of the machine. The plate 11 is adjustably connected by a part 1a of the frame 10 to a tailstock end plate 15 rotatably supporting a shaft 14 connected to the tailstock of the machine. The shaft 13 is rotatably mounted in bearings in a support member 17 which can be clamped to the bed 7 of the machine. A shaft 21 is rotatably mounted in the plate 11 and is connected by a belt or chain 15 to the shaft 13. One end of shaft 16 carries a three jaw chuck 20 for holding one end of the workpiece 23, such as a motor vehicle cam shaft, the other end of the workpiece being carried by a running centre 22 on the tailstock end plate 12. The other end of shaft 21 is engaged by a stub shaft 35 carrying a group 30 of master cams 30a ... 30d. The guide member 32 is engageable with a selected one of the master cams and is adjustably carried by a second support member 31 movable along the bed 7 of the machine by a lead screw 33 to align the guide member with the selected master cam. The frame is spring urged to engage the guide member with the master cam. The guide member is adjustable about a pivot parallel to the axis of the workpiece to compensate for variation of the height of the grinding wheel upon pivotal movement of the grinding wheel as a result of dressing of the wheel. The pivot is mounted in a slide 39 adjustable on the support 31 by a screw 43 to compensate for wear and driving of the wheel. In another embodiment, the shaft 13 about which the frame 10 pivots is lower than the headstock-tailstock axis and a drive is connected therebetween. The support 31 may be disposed so that the guide member engages a cam, which acts as a master cam, on the workpiece. Separate cams on stub shafts may be provided instead of a group of cams on a single shaft. The frame may be held in an inoperative position by a latch.
