Grinding apparatus comprises drive means on a frame assembly for driving an endless abrasive belt 44, Fig. 5, and a grinding head assembly having an arm 54a adjustably attached between its ends to the frame assembly for angular adjustment of the arm relative to the assembly, and two contact wheels 56, 57, one at each end of the arm and positioned to have the belt track over the wheels, the wheels providing arcuate backing for use in grinding arcuate surfaces having curvatures corresponding to the curvatures of the contact wheels. The arm 54a is formed with a pivot 52a clampable to a bracket secured by bolts 48a to the frame 11, Fig. 2, of the apparatus, which has a horizontal base 10 and carries an electric motor driving a pulley engaged by the bolt and an idler pulley adjustable to vary the tension and tracking of the belt. The arm can be positioned so that one or other of the contact wheels is in the operative position according to the curvature of the workpiece, or can be disposed in a vertical position, the run of belt between the wheels being backed by a platen 54b on the arm for grinding flat work; in the alternative vertical position of the arm the belt is unsupported between the contact wheels. The sub assembly comprising the arm 54a and contact wheels 56, 57 may be replaced by a single contact wheel 52, Fig. 1, having a dead shaft 52a mounted in the bracket 46 in place of the pivot. The tension and tracking of the belt 44 is effected by the idler pulley 43, Fig. 3, which is mounted on a dead shaft 40 carried by a pivot 39, Fig. 3, on a bar 26 connected at its ends to a plate 23 and arm 24, the other ends of which are mounted on spaced pivots 22, 25 on the frame, the arrangement conforming to a parallel linkage which can be moved about the pivots 22, 25 to cause the idler pulley 43 to tension the belt; a resilient arm 31 mounted in the plate 23 is adapted to engage an arcuate ratchet 30 on the frame 11 to resiliently load the pulley 43. The dead shaft 40 carrying the pulley 43 is movable about the pivot 39 against a spring by axial adjustment of a screw 37 having a tapered end 36a engaging the end of the screw to control the tracking of the belt. A side plate 12, Fig. 2, of the frame can be swung about a pivot 13 to provide access to the pulleys. The frame also carries a guard 15 for the belt and a brake 20 for the motor. A rest 58 may be fitted into slots in the bracket 46.
