Abstract
1,213,318. Tobacco cartridges; smokers' pipes. IMPERIAL TOBACCO GROUP Ltd. 25 Nov., 1968 [5 Jan., 1968], No. 911/68. Heading A2M. A tobacco cartridge comprises a charge of tobacco 12, preferably enclosed in a combustible sheath 13 (e.g. of reconstituted tobacco or paper), and held by one end in a rigid support 11 (e.g. of polystyrene) which provides an enclosed chamber 15, the support 11 being apertured (as at 21) or rupturable to provide access to the said one end of the tobacco charge 12. In the preferred embodiment shown, the support 11 houses a conventional smoke filter 16 overlaid by a ceramic filter plug 17 in its upper cylindrical portion 14 which portion 14 is united to the sheathed tobacco charge by a paper strip 20. A suitable pipe for use with the cartridge, Fig. 3, comprises a bowl 40 (which may be apertured or perforated) fixed to the body portion 31 of a cartridge holder 30 by means of a spring clip. The holder 30 also includes a hollow tube portion 33 that houses a bush 50 through which a tubular stem 44 extending from a mouthpiece 51 is reciprocable between limits determined by a spring clip 45 and the length of an annular space 53, i.e. between the position shown where the end of the stem 44 penetrates the chamber 15 of the cartridge and a position in which the stem 44 is disengaged from the cartridge. Suitable materials, from which the component parts of the pipe may be made, are disclosed.
