Abstract

1,213,317. Smokers' pipes. IMPERIAL TOBACCO GROUP Ltd. 22 May, 1969 [23 Feb., 1968], No. 910/68. Heading A2M. A pipe-like smoking device for use with cartridges of tobacco comprises a mouthpiece 51, a cavitied holder 30, and a stem 44 providing communication between the two, said stem 44 being adapted to project into the cavity for penetration into a cartridge therein to provide communication between the mouthpiece 51 and the interior of the cartridge. The embodiment shown in Fig 3, which uses a cartridge of the kind disclosed in Specification 1,213,318, comprises a bowl 40 (which may be apertured or perforated) fixed to the cartridge holder 30 by means of a spring clip 36. The holder 30 also includes a hollow tube portion 33 that houses a bush 50 through which the tubular stem 44 is reciprocable between limits determined by a spring clip 45 and the length of an annular space 53, i.e. between the position shown where the end of the stem 44 penetrates a chamber 15 of the cartridge and a position in which the stem 44 is disengaged from the cartridge. Another embodiment, Fig. 5, that utilises a conventional cylindrical-shaped tobacco cartridge 84, includes a slidable hollow stem 80 having a tapered end 81 and an aperture 82. In a further embodiment, Fig. 6, a bowl 91 is provided with a metal liner 93 and is adapted to retain a tobacco cartridge 94 provided with a support 95 having an aperture 96 with a conical seating 97 to accommodate the tapered end 98 of a stem 100. The stem 100 is slidably mounted, and is urged into the position shown by a helical spring 103. In yet another embodiment, Figs. 7, 8 (not shown), the bowl (110) has a fixed half section (111), to which section (111) a stem that projects into the bowl cavity and a mouthpiece (114) are fixed, and a movable half section pivoted about a vertical axis to allow the bowl (110) to be opened for insertion or removal of a cartridge.
