Abstract

1,207,648. Electrode materials and processing. METALLWERK PLANSEE A.G. 23 July, 1969 [12 Aug., 1968], No. 37051/69. Heading H1D. [Also in Division C7] In a method of producing rotary targets for X-ray tubes comprising a base body of graphite covered with a tungsten or tungsten alloy layer at least at the electron impingment areas, a first layer of tungsten or tungsten alloy is sprayed on to the graphite body and a further layer of tungsten or tungsten alloy is deposited thereon from gaseous compounds. In an example the first layer of pure tungsten, 1 mm. thick, is produced by spraying with a plasma gun and the second tungsten layer, 0À2 mm. thick, is deposited from a mixture of hydrogen and tungsten hexafluoride in the ratio of ten to one by the volume at 550‹ C. If an outer layer of tungsten-rhenium alloy is desired rhenium hexafluoride is added to the mixture. Alternatively tungsten hexachloride may be used in the vapour deposition of the tungsten layer, or tungsten itself can be directly vapourizd. Alloy additions of osimum and iridium may be similarly produced.
